Soccer Predictions 2017/2018

Now that the calendars have turned to August, the curtains are set to open to the new soccer season for 2017/18. The transfer merry go-round has been both intriguing and expensive (particularly for English clubs), as managers and players alike prepare themselves for the next campaign. It’s at this time that the speculation is the purest; no results, or form tables to guide those informed predictions; just pure judgment off the look of the squads, the congestion of the schedules and the ambition of the clubs.

1. EPL Soccer Predictions

Defending champions Chelsea have their work cut out for their title defence. The Blues added Bakayoko, Morata and Rudiger, but their squad still appears somewhat thin, especially compared to Manchester City. The Citizens have spared little expense in an expensive window with the arrivals of Bernardo SIlva, Walker, Danilo, Mendy and Ederson to boost an already massive squad deep in talent. Across the city, Manchester United haven’t done too badly themselves, reinforcing with Matic, Lindelof and Lukaku to improve their overall picture. Given present squads, it’s a brave man that bets against Manchester City for top spot, and Guardiola surely can’t escape another season at the Etihad empty handed. Chelsea still possess the best balanced squad in the top flight, so they should retain an impact on the title’s future. United are expected to improve considerably.

Current prediction outlook:

  • 1st – Manchester City
  • 2nd – Chelsea
  • 3rd – Manchester United
  • 4th – Tottenham
  • 5th – Arsenal

2. Spanish La Liga or Spain Primera Division

In La Liga, after last season’s tense finish, Real Madrid will be hoping for a far less dramatic finish to their campaign. Los Blancos took five seasons to recapture a La Liga crown, and they’ll be anxious to achieve back to back Liga titles for the first time since 2007/08. Oddly, their transfer activities have been somewhat tentative, the signing of young starlet Theo Hernandez their only major purchase. Their great rivals Barcelona are still reeling from the bittersweet departure of Neymar to France following a world record €222m sale. New right Nelson Semedo looks especially useful, but the Catalans still feel a touch shorter on midfield and attacking options, especially when compared to Real Madrid, who just seem to have far better balance of both quality and depth across their squad. Meanwhile, the industrious Atletico Madrid enter their first season in their new stadium and if past rumours are to be believed, their last under Diego Simeone. With no major signings in place, it remains to be seen if Los Rojiblancos will repeat the incredible feat of 2013/14.

Current prediction outlook:

  • 1st – Real Madrid
  • 2nd – Barcelona
  • 3rd – Atletico Madrid
  • 4th – Sevilla
  • 5th – Athletic Bilbao

3.South African PSL – League Champions

The Premier Soccer League delivered a massive surprise last season as Bidvest Wits built on their strong finish in 2015/16 to top the table in 2016/17, but Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane may well argue that his side’s distraction in the CAF Champions League took just enough inches off their title challenge. Volume of games may yet be an issue again, but the PSL title record holders will be hungry to remedy matters at the top of the PSL table. Experienced coach Gavin Hunt is expected to keep the Wits machine running smoothly and while hardly of the age where he can influence matters, new signing Steven Pienaar should be able to offer some useful European experience to his younger teammates. Cape Town City are the most difficult side to predict, given the unexpected choice to replace Eric Tinkler with Benni McCarthy. Equally, SuperSport United’s solid season may take on a title challenging turn if Tinkler can bring the magic that helped his side lead the PSL table for much of the 2016/17 campaign. Kaizer Chiefs represent the wildcard; the cyncism of fans aside, they’re arguably best placed to make the biggest improvement if they can prevent any further long patches of drawn matches.

Current prediction outlook:

  • 1st – Mamelodi Sundowns
  • 2nd – Bidvest Wits
  • 3rd – SuperSport United
  • 4th – Kaizer Chiefs
  • 5th – Cape Town City

4. UEFA Champions League Predictions

In recent years, the Champions League has become a highly predictable affair, with 4 sides in particular always seeming to secure passage to the final four. It’s fairly safe to expect at least 2 of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich to achieve this again. The tournament’s open ended knockout football style hasn’t been able to prevent Europe’s richest and most powerful clubs from dominating it. This has been especially telling in the last 9 years, with only Inter (2010) and Chelsea (2012) managing to interrupt wins for Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern. At least one of those 3 sides have occupied one of the finalist positions in the same period. Even though the outlook appears promising for the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea to make an impression, it’s not apparent that either of them will test the big 3 for the European crown. Outside bets of interest also reside with Juventus, who were impressive on the way to last season’s final, but crucially have lost one of their key defensive players in Bonucci. Arguably, only PSG appear to have the squad that could compete outright to upset the recent hegemony, especially with new signing Neymar so keen to impress and lead the cause without having to play to the shadow of Lionel Messi.

Current prediction outlook:

  • Champions – Real Madrid
  • Semifinalists – Barcelona
  • Semifinalists – Bayern Munich
  • Semifinalists – PSG
