Weekend Wrap 29 February

A busy sporting weekend with the start of the Super Rugby Season as well as some exciting soccer action. Read our brief weekend wrap.

Rugby

The opening weekend of Super Rugby produced some thrilling rugby. The game of the weekend was The Blues vs The Highlanders. The Blues secured a 33-31 victory over the defending champs and put claim to being one of the favourites. The Stormers produced a dominant display against the Bulls, while the Sharks cruised past an average-looking Kings side.

England, under their new couch Eddie Jones, secured another win in the 6 Nations beating Ireland 21-10. England are unbeaten and are on track to secure the Grand Slam, which they last achieved in 2003. Wales secured a 19-10 victory over France at the Principality Stadium and are still in contention for the title but will need to beat England at Twickenham in a fortnight. In the other match of the weekend Scotland beat Italy 36-20.

Soccer

The Premier League title race is heating up as Spurs came from behind to beat Swansea City 2-1, while Arsenal lost 3-2 to Manchester United and took a step backwards in their search for the Premier League title. Spurs are now 3 points clear of 3rd place Arsenal and just 2 points behind leaders Leicester City.

Manchester City beat Liverpool (3-1) on penalties to win the final of the Capital One Cup. The game finished 1-1 following extra time. The hero was Manchester City’s goalkeeper, Willy Caballero who saved 3 penalties to secure victory for the Blues.

Golf

Louis Oosthuizen secured his eighth European Title when he won the Perth International on Sunday. Louis carded a final round 71 to finish with a tournament total of 16 under (272) one stroke better than Alexander Levy.

Adam Scott beat Sergio Garcia by one shot to win the US PGA Honda Classic. This is Scott’s first trophy since May 2014.

“My game has come into a really good spot,” Scott said. “We’ve worked really hard to get it there, made some nice progress in all areas, especially the greens. It paid off this week.”
